Have any of you played with xgl yet ,

I think it comes as default with suse 10.1 and its on a few live cd's It's just a matter of a simple configuring.

It is very fun to mess around with if you can get it going.

XGL Gentoo Linux
Xgl is an X server designed to take advantage of graphics cards via their OpenGL it runs on top of drivers such as nvidia.

Hi, this is xgl running on my gentoo box you can run xgl on any linux distro and i believe it ships as default with many like suse.

The version i am using is beryl and its very easy to install,It has a gui interface to set the options that you wish.
The image here is set on a transparent cube so when i use alt+ctrl+direction or scroll on mouse it turns the cube to my desired desktop so i can check out 1 of my applications i have going this can all so be done by clicking on the application in the tool bar. There are many other effects and uses .

Applications running on desktop.
OS,Gentoo linux.
Beryl,A version of xgl there is all so compiz.
KDE,Desktop environment.
Gkrellm2,System monitor with many options ,Temp cpu clock etc.
Eterm,Terminal emulator intended as a replacement for xterm.
Amarok,A media player.
Mplayer, Movie player.
superkaramba,A tool to easily create eye-candy

Thats a list of some of the stuff running on the desktop the image in the background is whats called the skydome it is changeable in the beryl-manager options as is the top of the cube and bottom. There is only four sides of the cube that are active as desktops but the multiple desktops work really well.

You might be thinking man that must take up your system resources,Well no the first time i used it was on a AMD 1.3ghz cpu with only 384mb of ram and it worked very well even with gkrellm going and eye cany of other natures.

Have a go and remember have fun thats what its about

Well heres what i did to get it running in gentoo nothing you cant find on the wiki but i will post it up any ways :).

1. #emerge nvidia-drivers as root Smile
or nvidia-legacy-drivers for old cards.
2. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

At top of xorg.conf

Code::
Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Code::
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
        BoardName "GeForce 7800 GTX"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

Notice Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" thats what to put in there Smile
All so you will notice "nvidia" that shows that i am useing the up to date drivers.

3. Then #emerge beryl

I had to emerge nvidia-drivers again after this and #eselect opengl set nvida

3. Then #beryl-manager in terminal to start ,select beryl window manager in the options if its not set then have fun Smile
